Pine Straw Baskets

These baskets utilize a centuries old technique of stitching grass coils together. Artisans from Africa perfected the coiling technique and brought these skills with them to coastal South Carolina.  The Gullah baskets are usually made with grasses, but the same technique is used to make the pinestraw baskets pictured below.

A hand crafted ceramic base serves as the loom.  To form the loom, clay is rolled out, cut by hand and dried on a slump mold.  A series of small holes are hand punched around the perimeter of the loom.  Many of the ceramic bases are printed with leaves, glazed and fired in the kiln.  Long needle pine straw, gathered from the forest, is then woven onto the loom and a unique basket is created.

Depending on the size and detail of the loom, the baskets range in price from $35 to $125.

Special orders are welcome for customized baskets.
